Animals is now streaming on Netflix, and Ben Affleck’s new thriller puts a political career in the middle of a family emergency. A mayoral candidate and his wife receive a threat involving their son, then have to find the money and make decisions that could expose the life they have carefully built.

Netflix’s official film guide identifies Affleck as Los Angeles mayoral hopeful Mark Kimball, with Kerry Washington playing his wife Abigail. Affleck also directed and co-wrote the film. Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun, Luis Gerardo Méndez and Adriana Paz are among the supporting cast. The film runs approximately one hour and 48 minutes.

What is Animals about?

The official synopsis begins with a kidnapping and a ransom demand. That is enough to establish the danger without giving away the twists. The more interesting complication is the victim’s family: people whose private choices could also become public liabilities. In that situation, protecting someone and protecting a reputation may stop being the same task.
A political thriller gets sharper when its characters cannot solve a personal crisis with the tools that normally keep them in control. Influence can create access, but it can also bring witnesses. Money may open a door while creating another obligation. Even a carefully worded statement can make things worse when the wrong person hears it.

Why Affleck wanted to direct it

In his interview with Netflix’s Tudum, Affleck says the original script drew him through its interest in the gap between people’s public masks and their underlying selves. He describes wanting the audience to be curious about the characters as well as the central mystery. Those comments explain the intended focus; they are not a verdict on how successfully the finished film achieves it.
He also discusses rehearsing with the actors in the actual filming location for a couple of weeks. The house was chosen to express a contradiction: substantial wealth presented with a degree of deliberate modesty. That is a useful detail for a story about people whose surroundings already communicate something they may not say aloud.

Los Angeles is more than a backdrop

Affleck’s account of the city emphasizes adjacent communities with different economic circumstances, cultures and languages. He explains that the film moves into Spanish-language storytelling because those languages coexist in Los Angeles. The setting gives the story more possibilities than a generic wealthy household under siege.
For a thriller with political stakes, those differences matter. The same emergency can look completely different depending on who has resources, who has connections and who expects to be believed. The premise invites viewers to pay attention to those imbalances alongside the ransom clock.

Where to watch Animals

Animals began streaming on Netflix on October 9. This is a spoiler-free introduction to its premise and production, so you can go in without knowing the ending. If the appeal is a compact crime drama built around pressure, secrecy and a strong ensemble, this is the setup to know before pressing play.
