GEAR 5 IS COOKED… SO WHO ORDERED GEAR 6?
Imu’s dismissal of Luffy as a weaker imitation of Joy Boy—and Gear 5’s collapse mid-fight—suggests the Nika fruit has another transformation waiting in the wings.
Luffy’s Gear 5 has finally run into an opponent it cannot simply cartoon-punch into next week. After Imu’s brutal reality check in Elbaf, One Piece is waving a giant neon flag: the Sun God may need to evolve again.
Gear 5 finally met its problem
When Luffy awakened the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika in Chapter 1044, the series did not merely give him another form. It gave him a myth, a laugh, an absurd body made of freedom, and enough cartoon physics to make Kaido look like he had wandered into the wrong genre.
Then Luffy defeated Kaido in Chapter 1049.
Later, he threw down with Kizaru, survived the chaos of Egghead, and stood against the Five Elders. Gear 5 became the ultimate symbol of Luffy’s growth: wild, ridiculous, liberating, and strong enough to make the old rules of combat start sweating.
But Elbaf has delivered a very rude message.
Nerona Imu is not Kaido.
Imu is not Kizaru.
And apparently, Imu is not impressed by Luffy arriving with white hair, a drumbeat heart, and enough rubbery confidence to turn an attack into a gag.
In Chapter 1188, Imu stabbed Luffy through the chest using the Blade of Nothingness: Vohu. The King of the World then made the hierarchy painfully clear:
“Of course I know that thou art not Joy Boy! Joy Boy was not this weak!!”
Not just physically. Spiritually. Narratively. Somewhere, every Gear 5 agenda-pusher had to put their sunglasses down and stare at the ceiling for a minute.
Because Imu did not say Luffy was strong but unfinished.
Imu said Joy Boy was on another level.
The heartbeat is acting suspicious
Luffy has maintained Gear 5 throughout the Elbaf conflict, but the form begins to run out of steam as he tries to follow his Gomu Gomu no Dawn Thor Bullet with another attack on Imu. His heartbeat starts returning to normal. He collapses. Gear 5 appears to fade.
Normally, this would be the part where readers scream, “Eat meat, captain!” and wait for the next impossible recovery.
But Oda adds something stranger.
Luffy notices a change happening inside his transformation:
“He’s gonna revive himself soon enough. We gotta pile it on before he gets the chance to do that.”
“You’re right about that! Okay, I’m in!”
“Oh no, my heartbeat is coming back. I can’t go back now! If my injuries come back, there’s no way I can keep fighting. No! Stop! At least let me beat him first!”
“Ah, hmmm???” — Luffy and Loki battling Nerona Imu Chapter #1193
Something has changed in Luffy’s body.
The manga has not told us what he discovered, so anybody confidently announcing “Gear 6 confirmed” should slow down before they pull a muscle doing victory laps. But the visual and narrative setup strongly suggests that Luffy’s Nika transformation is still evolving.
The heartbeat is the core symbol of Gear 5. The Drums of Liberation announce Nika’s awakening. If that rhythm is changing when Luffy is at his limit, then Oda may be hinting at a new phase—not merely a refill of the same form.
Why Haki alone cannot fix it
After all, Supreme King Haki is one of the most decisive powers in the New World. It helped Luffy reach Kaido’s level, and it remains central to the top tier of One Piece combat.
But Rayleigh already explained the inconvenient rule in Chapter 597:
“Though you can control the Color of the Supreme King, you can’t train it to be stronger directly. It is the embodiment of the spirit of the user. The only way to make it stronger is for the user to grow stronger.”
Conqueror’s Haki is not a gym stat. Luffy cannot wake up, do fifty Haki push-ups, drink protein milk from a giant cup, and return to out-aura Imu by lunch.
His Haki strengthens as he strengthens.
Which means if Luffy needs a major increase in Conqueror’s output, his body, spirit, Devil Fruit mastery, or transformation must move forward too. Gear 5’s limit against Imu is therefore not just an energy problem. It is evidence that Luffy’s current peak is not yet Joy Boy’s peak.
Say the Sun God has a ceiling?
Apparently, yes.
And Oda has just handed that ceiling a hammer.
Gear 6—or a new Gear 5 branch?
That does not make Gear 5 irrelevant. It means the form may be a foundation rather than the final destination. The Nika fruit is already an awakened Mythical Zoan, so any next stage would likely be less about discovering a completely different power and more about Luffy reaching a deeper, more stable, and more devastating level of the freedom-based ability he already holds.
- • Gear 6 - A completely new named transformation that pushes Nika’s power, Luffy’s physical ability, and his Conqueror’s Haki beyond Gear 5’s current limits.
- • A Gear 5 variant - Like Gear 4’s Boundman, Tankman, and Snakeman forms, Gear 5 could receive a specialised sub-form designed for a specific threat such as Imu.
Maybe he needs a more combat-focused Nika mode.
Maybe a form built for durability.
Maybe one designed around overwhelming Conqueror’s Haki.
Maybe the Nika fruit can access something closer to Joy Boy’s original power when Luffy’s will reaches the breaking point.
Or maybe Oda will invent a third option that makes every theory thread look like a pirate tried to read the Poneglyphs upside down.
Would it be surprising? Not even remotely.
Elbaf needs an answer
The country’s future is on the line.
Loki has entered the battle in the hybrid form of his Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Nidhoggr, while the Wings of the Pirate King are fighting the Holy Knights. Scopper Gaban has already stepped in once to save Luffy from what would have been certain death after Imu’s attack.
Every major player is burning through their options.
And Luffy, after going all-out, has already collapsed.
That is the final-saga version of the “we may have a slight issue” alarm.
But one point feels unavoidable: Gear 5 cannot remain exactly as it is if Imu remains this far above Luffy.
Gear 5 was never the finish line
It was the form fans had waited years to see: Luffy’s Devil Fruit mystery resolved, Joy Boy’s legend reborn, the most joyful power in the series unleashed at the exact moment Wano needed liberation.
But One Piece has always treated every peak as a new horizon.
East Blue Luffy could not imagine Gear 2.
Gear 2 could not imagine Gear 4.
Gear 4 could not imagine a mythical Sun God who turns the battlefield into a cartoon.
And Gear 5 may not yet be able to imagine the version of Luffy who can stand beside Joy Boy’s legend instead of beneath it.
GameRant did the original cooking on this theory; I only arrived with the Nika-flavoured pepper, saw Luffy’s heartbeat glitching, and asked why the final boss had apparently installed anti-cartoon updates. The key evidence is there: Imu calls Luffy weaker than Joy Boy, Gear 5 reaches its limit in Chapter 1193, and Luffy’s changing heartbeat points toward an unresolved evolution.
No.
It is probably just preheating.
And if Gear 6 is really coming, Imu may soon learn the worst lesson any tyrant can learn:
You can suppress freedom.
You can stab it.
You can laugh at it.
But the moment freedom starts beating like a different drum?
Brother… run.
