God of War Laufey Finally Shows What Faye Can Do Without Kratos
The new look at Faye’s combat suggests a God of War game built around precision, movement, and a character who has spent too long at the edge of someone else’s story.
Faye has always carried enormous weight in God of War. Her choices shape the journeys of Kratos and Atreus, even when she is absent from the screen. That makes a game with Faye at its center more interesting than a change of playable character. It gives Santa Monica Studio a chance to show who she is when nobody else is telling her story.
The studio’s latest look at God of War, Laufey, offers its clearest answer through combat. Faye’s new Serpent Bow has two aiming styles. A full press of the aim trigger gives her greater precision and range, including shots that can impair an enemy’s movement or attack. A half press keeps her mobile and lets her fire clusters of arrows at close range. She can also switch between arrow types and alter the bow’s abilities with different scales. The game is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027. blog.playstation.com
Those details matter because they describe a fighter who controls distance. Faye can create an opening from afar, move in to exploit it, or use rapid shots to keep an enemy airborne while extending a combination. On paper, that is a strong foundation for a character who should feel capable in her own right. It also makes the practical question sharper: will players need to make meaningful choices between those approaches, or will the bow simply offer several ways to deal damage?
The answer will depend on the enemies and encounters. Precision means more when hitting the right place changes a fight. Mobility means more when standing still is costly. Santa Monica Studio has shown the tools, but a combat system becomes memorable through the problems it asks players to solve with them.
There is a story question here, too. Players know Faye largely through what she left behind and what others learned about her. Letting them act as her could deepen that understanding, provided the game gives her desires and decisions room to exist beyond her connection to Kratos and Atreus. The revealed combat suggests someone resourceful and deliberate. Whether the full adventure makes her equally specific as a person remains to be seen.
Preorders are scheduled to open September 29 at 10:00 a.m. local time. Santa Monica Studio has detailed a preorder bonus and a Digital Deluxe Edition, but neither is a reason to pass judgment on the game yet. The more valuable reveal is Faye’s fighting style: a first indication that Laufey may find her identity by putting her choices, both in battle and in the story, at the center.
