Briar’s magic is tied to emotion, which is a terrible design choice for a teenager. One bad day and objects start floating. One heartbreak and the entire school might need an exorcist.
She teams up with Sasha, who can read minds; Tegan, who can bend time; and Jake, a warlock whose charm comes with a suspicious interest in darker magic. Add Ollie, a newly turned vampire who refuses to drink human blood, and the academy becomes less “boarding school” and more “emotional hazard zone with cloaks.”

The show’s official premise makes it clear: power is currency, secrets are lethal, and attraction is a liability. That last part is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

Yes, there is a love triangle. Briar is caught between Jake, the powerful warlock with a dangerous edge, and Ollie, the gentle vampire trying not to become the thing he hates.
But creator Tim Federle has said the strongest relationship is not romantic—it is the sisterhood between Briar, Sasha, and Tegan. Their coven is the show’s emotional spine: three girls learning that magic is easier when you are not carrying the world alone.
