THE SPEED RUN: SLOW HORSES - TV SERIES TOP RATER

Slow Horses is a TV series where MI5’s rejects solve deadly spy cases while their boss insults them from beneath a layer of cigarette smoke and questionable hygiene.

SLOW HORSES — WHERE THE SPIES ARE DISGRACED, THE BOSS SMELLS LIKE CIGARETTES, AND SOMEHOW THEY STILL SAVE ENGLAND

Some spy agencies have elite agents in tailored suits. MI5 has Slough House: a dumping ground for people who made mistakes so spectacular that even failure needs a separate building.
Apple TV’s Slow Horses is a TV series about those rejects—spies who are too damaged, too embarrassing, or too inconvenient to fire properly. They are led by Jackson Lamb, played by Gary Oldman, a brilliant, flatulent, chain-smoking, insult-dispensing intelligence veteran who looks like he has personally fought bureaucracy and won by making it cry.

The show adapts Mick Herron’s Slough House novels and turns espionage into something less glamorous than James Bond and more emotionally accurate: bad coffee, office politics, trauma, secrets, and people trying not to die before lunch.

The Worst Office In MI5

River Cartwright arrives at Slough House after a catastrophic training exercise ruins his career. He expects punishment. He gets Lamb, a boss who treats encouragement like a bacterial infection.
The team includes Louisa Guy, Roddy Ho, Shirley Dander, Marcus Longridge, and Catherine Standish—each one carrying a career-ending mistake, a personal wound, or both. They are called “Slow Horses” because they are considered finished, useless, and too slow to matter.
Then the actual spies at MI5 start making mistakes, and suddenly the rejects are the only people capable of cleaning up the mess.

Lamb Is A Menace, But He’s Right

Jackson Lamb is not a traditional hero. He is rude, unwashed, sarcastic, and allergic to professionalism. He calls his team idiots, insults their competence, and treats every crisis like an inconvenience interrupting his drinking schedule.
But beneath the filth and cruelty is one of television’s sharpest intelligence minds. Lamb sees the moves before anyone else, understands institutional rot better than the people running it, and protects his misfits with the energy of a man who would deny caring while actively taking a bullet for them.
Gary Oldman makes Lamb iconic because he is never softened. He is not secretly charming in a neat little arc. He is difficult, damaged, brilliant, and somehow exactly the person you want beside you when MI5 starts lying.

The Real Enemy Is The Institution

Each season gives the Slow Horses a new crisis—kidnappings, assassinations, rogue operations, betrayals, and conspiracies—but the deeper enemy is always the same: MI5 itself.
Diana Taverner, played by Kristin Scott Thomas, is the perfect embodiment of that problem. She is competent, ruthless, politically skilled, and fully capable of sacrificing the Slow Horses if it protects the Park.
The series understands that espionage is not just spies versus villains. It is spies versus institutions, institutions versus truth, and everyone versus the paperwork.
Failure’s contagious.”

A Question For The Philosophers

If a system sends its best people to a dumping ground, is the system broken—or has it simply found a more efficient way to deny responsibility?
And if Jackson Lamb insults you, is that a sign he dislikes you—or that he has decided you are worth keeping alive?

The Verdict

Slow Horses trends because it proves the best spy stories do not need glamour. They need tension, intelligence, dark humor, and characters who are too stubborn to quit.
Gary Oldman, Jack Lowden, Kristin Scott Thomas, and the ensemble make Slough House feel like the most dysfunctional workplace in Britain—and somehow the most necessary one.
Credit to Apple TV, Mick Herron, Will Smith, See-Saw Films, and the original reporting behind the adaptation; they did the cooking, I just arrived with pepper, spice, and a deep respect for any man who can save the country while looking like he lost a fight with a kebab.
